Great news has emerged from the U.S. state of Kentucky for online poker players everywhere! The Kentucky Court of Appeals issued a ruling last week prohibiting the Franklin Circuit Court from enforcing its seizure order against the 141 domain names of internet poker sites that were seized illegally by the state of Kentucky. In case you haven’t followed this story Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear seized 141 internet gambling domains, including those belonging to several major online poker rooms. The Court found that Internet domain names are not a “gambling device” under Kentucky law and that the Franklin County Circuit Court’s ruling that these domain names constituted gambling devices that were subject to forfeiture was erroneous. I have been following this case for a while and this is great news. If the state of Kentucky basically said since casino online poker is illegal in that state, they could seize the domain names of any online poker site, no matter where it is based, and shut it down. This is, of course, illegal and if upheld would have allowed basically any government anywhere that doesn’t allow online poker to try and shut down any online poker site as long as anyone who lives in their jurisdiction was using it! This would have been preposterous and disastrous, and this is a victory for online poker players everywhere.

When people talk about cheating in poker, they tend to talk primarily about collusion. Collusion takes place when two or more players work together to defraud and disadvantage the other players and the house. This tends to get a lot of attention on online forums because online casinos are particularly susceptible to collusion. Players can talk to each other about their cards using cellular phones or other technology that cannot be monitored by casino security. Because this is such a major fear, you often hear it discussed anywhere that players gather to talk about online poker.

But the value you’re giving up by checking there is a waste of money. You raised then lost all initiative when you checked the ace that a middle position hand could have. And you can do this a lot of time when you’re out of position with high card and just get a caller in late position. Chances are they don’t have a great hand, either suited connectors or a smaller pocket pair, so you can use the high card to your advantage by using it to scare your opponent out of the pot.

There is a quite a difference between the short field online poker tournaments available in online poker, of say 9-50 players, and the larger sized fields that can go all the way up to 500, 1000, or more. While short run poker online tournaments allow you the opportunity to build your stack in shorter runs, the large field tournament can not only bring in bigger pots, but also bring a real sense of achievement to your game. One of the major difference between short and large handed poker online tournaments is the pace with which you play. While playing in large fields, you can take your time a little longer, playing big pots with big hands and watching the fields narrow themselves down as you go. A lot of this also depends on the length of the periods, but clearly in the large field you are playing a game of patience and lengthy duration, while the short field is more of a sprint (though still one requiring well timed aggression and action). Even if you prefer the sit n go method, playing in a large field tournament now and then is a good method for keeping some perspective and variety in your game.
