Culinary herbs are safe to use in the kitchen without any need for caution, as the majority have been used in food preparation for countless generations and these include the well known sage, garlic, rosemary, thyme and parsley. But the range of these traditional herbs is ever increasing beyond the locally grown herbs as we import them from all over the world and venture into new taste experiences for our palates. Many of these familiar culinary garden herbs can also be safely used as cottage remedies for common complaints so are included amongst the range of medicinal herbs from which our medicines are produced. Therefore herbs such as chamomile, valerian, lavender and many others are quite safe to use in cottage healing.

Medicinal herbs and plants, however, gathered for the production both of modern drugs and of herbal remedies are not generally found in garden cultivation, but are gathered from the wild in many countries throughout the world, or cultivated in commercial plantings for specific purposes. Their use in the manufacture of medicinal drugs is limited as this method aims to make synthetic replicas of the active ingredients by chemical means. In contrast, great volumes of raw herbs and plants are required for drying for herbal teas, for powder used in tablets or for the liquid plant extracts which provide the bottled medicines we find in health food shops and in herbal dispensaries.

Professional herbalists have the responsibility of undertaking considerable study in order to learn which herbs are best prescribed and in what doses, as well as learning the cautions which are required as to those plants which are best avoided. Their professional recommendation is therefore generally advised.

Each herbal substance possesses specific properties, whether it is the root, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits or seeds or the whole plant itself. There can be some variance in the quantities and qualities of these properties, depending upon the growing conditions and methods used in plant production. Appropriate information is detailed, for the benefit of consumers, upon the label of every product.

Constituents of Medicinal Herbs:

The most well known medicinal herbs have been thoroughly researched as to their active constituents. This information provides us with a reason why these plants have been satisfactorily used in traditional medicine for so many centuries but this is not the only reason. It is because when the plant substances are administered in their entire form with the organic chemicals arranged and proportionate to nature’s recipe, it provides a natural balance and a mysterious ‘x’ factor or life factor, known as ’synergy’ which no amount of analysis or scientific investigation has been able to explain. Isolating the identified ‘active constituents’ is not as effective as methods which keep the plant whole.

Herbalists depend upon their herbal material being of high quality, organically grown where possible. It is either dried for use in teas, powdered for tablets or produced as liquid extracts or medicinal tinctures. These methods guarantee their success in healing as the vital ingredients are supported by other properties which provide a safe chemical balance with no ’side effects’.

As well as the mineral, vitamin and protein content of plants the most important of the active constituents found in medicinal herbs fall into certain categories, each with special function in healing.

Phenols - anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antioxidant and perhaps antiviral.
Flavonoids - help circulation, are antioxidant and protect the liver.
Volatile Oils - from which come our essential oils each with a wide variety of applications.

Tannins - these astringent plants are used to stop bleeding and check any infection.

Coumarins - have a wide range of actions some keeping the blood the and in others are muscle relaxants.

Saponins - similar to chemicals in body hormones, oestrogen and cortisol - caution is required. Proanthocyanins - compounds which are antioxidant and help the heart and circulation Anthraquinones - these have irritant laxative action used to ease bowel movements.

Glycosides - cyanogenic, in high doses are poisonous - but in small doses to treat cancer and lung problems.

Glycosides - cardiac, affect the heart and also are diuretic.

Polysaccharides - in roots, bark and seeds soothe irritations and some help the immune system. Glucosilinates - found only in the brassicas - radish, cabbages etc.

Bitters - stimulate the salivary glands and digestive organs to improve appetite.

Alkaloids - give mixed reactions - with a strong effect in pain relief but care must be used to avoid negative reactions.

Generally the herbalist relies upon the traditional uses as a basis for prescribing herbal medicine or herbal supplements. Because most herbs have a wide range of therapeutic use, both external and internal, there may sometimes be a confusion or even an apparent contradiction as to choice of a remedy. For example, thyme, is a natural antiseptic, but also relieves headaches and gotu kola can be applied externally to eczema or as a tonic for brain and nervous system. Traditional uses often vary in the different countries of their origin.

However, many herbs remain in the Materia Medica used by orthodox doctors and so can be referenced there as well as in the Herbal Materia Medica now available from Britain. Research into herbs is also very advanced in Australia and some European countries. In addition, the extensive research commenced by the Russians may soon be available to the west. The ancient systems of both Chinese medicine and the Indian Ayurveda are becoming known to us to add further growth and a new dimension to the healing sciences.

For those who wish to avoid modern medicinal drugs and the side effects which are common to all of them, safe herbal medicine is the answer. When used as a supplement to a healthy diet with plenty of naturally produced fresh fruit, salads, vegetables, nuts and grains it provides a natural way of supplying the body with the variety of elements required both in maintaining physical health and relieving any symptoms of illness.

Public confidence in using herbs as a safer and more natural alternative to the artificially produced drugs is growing steadily. Millions are now enjoying the benefits of a healthier and more natural lifestyle as their health is gradually built up and physical discomforts diminish.

There is usually no sudden reaction as experienced with drugs, but if you take medicinal herbs you will find a steady improvement and will be inclined to continue to follow the safe, sure ways which are closer to Nature and as many believe, closer to the divine intention in providing us with access to simple remedies in ‘the herbs of the field’.

We all know how important good credit is in our lives. Today,
credit is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Credit makes it
possible for us to buy needed items, without paying for them at
the time of the purchase. Without a good credit rating, it is
very difficult for us to fulfill our dreams of buying a car,
buying a house, obtaining credit cards, enjoying a lifestyle
filled with fine clothes, rich foods and exotic vacations.

You can establish a good credit record even if you have no
reported credit history. A good credit rating indicates to
others that you manage your debts responsibly and are likely to
pay back your debts.

When you apply for any type of credit or financing, credit
grantors check your credit report to determine whether you are a
good credit risk. Based on the information contained in your
report, a creditor may decide to grant credit to you or turn you
down.

Credit reporting agencies, also known as credit bureaus, compile
and sell your credit report to businesses. Credit bureaus are
for-profit corporations. They collect information on credit
users and make them available to their subscribers - credit card
companies, banks, retailers, and other lenders.

If you ever applied for credit, you probably have a credit file
with one or all of the three major credit bureaus. This is
called a credit report. Your credit report shows how you manage
your credit accounts. It contains a history of everything you
are doing with your credit now, and everything you have done in
the past.

If you’ve never applied for credit, you may not have a credit
report. Without a credit report, lenders have no way of judging
if you are a good credit risk.

As a first step to building good credit, get a copy of your
credit report. You can get a free copy if you were denied credit
within the past 60 days because of information contained in your
report. However, if you simply wish to check your record, the
credit bureau will charge a fee for giving you information.

To get your report, simply contact the credit bureau that keeps
your report and request it. In your notice of denial you’ll see
the name and contact information of the credit bureau that keeps
your report. Your request should include all identifying
information, such as, your name, address, Social Security
Number, date of birth and spouse’s name (if applicable). Be sure
to sign the letter.

Once you get your report, study it. Look over it carefully for
negative accounts and inaccuracies, particularly older accounts.
Once you have reviewed your report, begin disputing the negative
items on your report right away. Correct and update inaccurate
information on your credit report.

All the information you need to dispute or amend an error is
included in the information package you receive from the credit
bureau.

If there is any information in that report that is not true, or
if you want to dispute any information on it, don’t hesitate to
do so. By law the credit bureau must investigate.

Keep copies of everything you send and send the letters
certified mail with return receipt requested.

The credit bureau must respond to your dispute within “a
reasonable amount of time.” You should receive a written report
on the results of the investigation.

If a reinvestigation does not resolve your dispute, ask the
credit bureau to include your statement, explaining your version
of the dispute. The law allows you to file a Consumer Statement
of 100 words or less. This will be added to your report.

Also, you have the right to request an updated copy of your
report be sent to anyone who has checked your file within the
past six months (or two years if it involves employment).

Once you’ve removed negative entries, it’s time to rebuild good
credit record. Secured credit cards can be an effective way to
establish or rebuild your credit history. They look and are used
just like any other credit card.

A secured credit card requires you to open and maintain a
savings account as security against default. But it can be a
good deal because it offers you the convinience of having a
credit card while you work on building your credit. No
withdrawals can be made from the savings account securing the
secured card while the secured credit account is open.

Your credit line is a percentage of your deposit, typically 50
to 100 percent. Most issuing banks will pay interest on your
deposit. Before you apply for a secured credit card, make sure
the issuer reports to a credit bureau. If your card issuer does
not report to a credit bureau, the secured card won’t help you
build a credit history.

If they do, and if you mainatain a good account your good credit
rating will be recorded on your report. When you apply for
credit in the future, your chances of being approved will be
much better.

Once you have established your credit you will have access to
the financial safety net that good credit provides.

Don’t you just love bean soup in the winter? This is an Italian version that we think is very good. Use any dried white bean you have. I particularly like the white kidney beans, but any of them will do. I also like the little tubular pasta that isn’t much bigger than the beans. It holds some of the thick liquid and the size seems just right. Also, have lots of extra parmesan cheese at the table for stirring in at the last minute. Add some crusty bread and a salad and you’ve got a perfect winter supper.

2 T olive oil

1 small onion, diced

2 carrots, diced

1 large stalk celery, diced

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 1/2 cups canned tomatoes

2 cups white beans, cooked

3 cups chicken broth

1/2 lb small pasta

1/4 cup chopped parsley

1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated

salt and pepper to taste

I prefer to pressure cook the beans which only takes about 45 minutes. You can cook beans in 3 times water to beans until tender, covered over medium heat, until done. If not using a pressure cooker, simmer over low heat until the beans are tender. If not using a pressure cooker, it should take at least an hour and a half.

Sauté the onions, carrots and celery in olive oil until tender, about 10 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1 minute. Add tomatoes and simmer 5 minutes. Add pasta and cook until al dente. Add beans. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add parsley. Adjust seasoning. Serve with generous portions of parmesan cheese and crusty bread.

Enjoy!

I think you would agree that even the most positive person in the world has negative thoughts on the golf course.
Certain situations bring doubt to the most stalwart golfer. He thinks that he must just nip this ball perfectly and get it just by the pin or even better into the hole. He sets up and he feels anxious. He has played this shot so often at practice. Still, he has to get this just right. He makes his swing, and because of his state of mind, what does he do? He looks up too soon, and duffs the shot. The ball goes half way and he has lost a shot. All because of his negative state of mind. His anxiety.
He moves on to the next tee thinking what may have been, and also being aware that this is an exasperating game and impossible to tame. It is fatal to take the game of golf too easily, and think you have mastered it. If you reach this state of mind then that is when things start to go dreadfully wrong.

It is fatal to become too sure of your self.
All this means that something has to be done to the frame of mind that results in negativity.
It is possible to do things on the course to develop a more positive attitude as you make your golf swing on the tee or hit shots around the greens.
I think you will agree that it is impossible to think of two things at the same time. Right?

Well, just before you walk up to hit your tee shot, you say to yourself, “I can I can I can I can……” over and over until you have hit your ball.
There will be no room for negative thoughts, and because you have not thought much about your swing as you have been saying “I can…” you will be amazed at the result.
Give it a try.

You limit yourself. Yes, it is true. Each day you behave in much
the same way as you have always done. You act out your habitual
ways of dealing with people, and you communicate as well or as
badly as you normally do.

Although you know better, you do not apply all that you have
learned when it comes to making the most of yourself. If this is
true for you, then how are you going to improve?

Awareness is key. Until you spot what you are doing you will not
know where to make changes to how you talk to people. How can
you change what needs to be improved if you do not see it
yourself?

There is a very simple way to generate awareness of how you
behave with other people. A way to develop perspective that is
not clouded by your biased perceptions.

Three Steps to Powerful Perspective:

1 Be a neutral observer

Choose a recent conversation you had which did not go as well as
you would have liked. Next, pretend for a moment that you are a
neutral observer of the conversation. In your imagination go
back in time to that incident and see yourself talking to that
other person. Picture the surroundings, hear the sounds and feel
the atmosphere of the place.

Then run through the entire conversation again, only this time
imagine that you are the neutral observer. See yourself and the
other person talking and listening to each other and notice the
dynamics of the conversation. Pay special attention to the non
verbal reactions.

By doing this you will be gathering a lot of information that
will be helpful in noticing what works and what does not work in
your communication.

2 Be the other person

Revisit the conversation again only this time cycle through it
as if you were the other person. Imagine what it was like to be
there looking at you and listening to you. You are now walking
in their shoes so as to get a close up look at what it is like
to deal with you.

You may find that you spot the reasons why the conversation did
not go as well as you would have liked.

3 Ask yourself - how did I get the result I achieved?

In this stage of the process you put the responsibility on your
shoulders alone for the outcome of the conversation. Blaming
others will not help you to think creatively for solutions and
ways to better your conversational skills.

Revisit that conversation one more time as the neutral observer
and one time as the other person. In each case look for the
answer to the question: how did I get this result? Then ask
yourself: what could I do differently to get what I really want?

You will discover ways to change your approach that can
dramatically improve how you communicate when it matters most.

By using this approach I often spot opportunities to use more
emphasis on key points and the value of being enthusiastic when
I want someone to consider my opinion. At other times I notice
that I could listen more carefully instead of just getting
carried away with my own agenda.

Play with this way of developing perspective for yourself and
have fun spotting all the little differences that add up to a
big difference in your ability to speak with impact.

Approach #1. No Website

  • Pros - No payment for a domain name, no ISP fees, no worry about keeping it up-to-date or checking on statistics - i.e. no fuss or bother with the Internet.
  • Cons - Embarrassment when people ask for your website address. Lack of credibility for your business in the minds and eyes of those who search for your site. Lack of the fun and pride that come with having a website.

Approach #2. A Free Website with Site Building Tools

  • Pros - No big expenditure of funds. By following directions, you can have a decent website up and running within a short amount of time. The building tools and templates will help you with your decisions.
  • Cons - Free sites often include advertisements which will detract from your own content. Free sites are obviously “free” so don’t give the impression of a credible business presence. In addition, many are database driven, so won’t be picked up by search engines.

Approach #3. A Homemade Website

  • Pros - You will save money and learn a great deal about how the Internet works and doesn’t work. You will feel a great deal of pride in your accomplishment and also be able to maintain your website on a regular basis.
  • Cons - You will be amazed by the number of hours it will take to learn how to use any of the authoring tools. I know they say that FrontPage is easy - not if you want to have an extraordinary, non-amateurish looking and working website. Moreover, will you know if your website looks “homemade?”

Approach #4. A Family Member/Friend Made Website

  • Pros - Again, you save money. A family member/friend has your best interest at heart. If they are a professional designer, you may be in for a treat and a website that will please you and your visitors.
  • Cons - If, however, you are displeased, how will you tell this family member/friend without losing their love and/or friendship. Will they be willing to maintain the website? How comfortable will you be telling them what to do and not to do?

Approach #5. Novice Website by Some Do-Gooder

  • Pros - Again you will be saving money. This may be a novice who has just completed a course and wants to create your website for his or her “portfolio.” Or, it may be someone who is starting out and charging much less than the going rate. Or someone who feels that everyone should have a website (YES!), so will help you achieve that goal.
  • Cons - Oftentimes, even though the novice means well, they just don’t have enough experience with the wiles of the web. In addition, if it is someone you know well, how are you going to tell him or her that the site really looks and navigates like a novice put it together?

Approach #6. Professional Website by a Professional Designer

  • Pros - You are paying for a professional website, so you can make sure that you get a professional website. Before hiring the designer, check out his or her prior work, ask questions and get all of the concerns answered up front. You will have a signed contract to guarantee that everything goes as expected. You will experience the fun and credibility that come with a website you are proud of.
  • Cons - For a top professional designer, you will need to spend some money. Plan to set aside somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000 depending upon the size and complexity of the site. How many pages? Do you want a shopping cart? Interactive forms?

Why does everyone look forward to a holiday in summer and not the autumn when the weather is damp dismal and gloomy? Why not winter when freezing weather conditions prevents us from leaving the home? Why do people leave a summer behind to go abroad on holiday when all the flowers and bud cascading blossoms are in bloom. Why when the birds sing? Well let me tell you, people have waited all year round scrimping to save to give the family a holiday but due to work commitments and kiddies schooling people are forced to travel when the system says so.

Okay so our options are zilch on when we travel but what the system has no say on is what we leave behind and that is all our cares and woes.

A fortnight away on holiday lies ahead, two weeks of pure relaxation, eating, drinking, partying, dancing, golfing and sailing. The sheer thought of sunbathing on a hot sun kissed beach toned to a perfect bronze is a fabulous way of forgetting all your troubles even if only for a short while.

Kiddies clubs scattered all over with fully trained staff to keep the children out of harms way and happy. Just like the water and theme parks. Appetizing gourmet meals served up daily to suit every palette. Fast food outlets dishing up french fries and burger smothered with lashings of ketchup. Steaming red hot lobster shrimp and crab eaten while over looking the azure ocean. A chilled cocktail sipped while the romantic setting of the evening sunset disappears.

Dancing till dawn can take its toll increasing the yearning for the tranquillity of secluded coves. Peace and quiet can be found all over especially on the well maintained golf courses. Hotel staff offer top quality service, comfort is first and foremost on their list of duties while attending to your needs. Hospitality and history of their native culture is shared with you if asked.

Nightly sing along sessions with famous faces and karaoke for all those who love to take their voices to the extreme. Water sport activities for the fast and furious who want a piece of the action, all this surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. A definite feel of Manhattan comes through strong with the stream line of hotels that run along the palm tree promenade. The glitzy colourful neon lights brighten up the skies; eat your heart out Las Vegas and not forgetting their very own Monte Carlo area with its casino. If nightlife is what you seek then put Ibiza on hold.

None of the above tickles your fancy then surely a night at the palace may just do the trick. The tricky part is where to look for a holiday that has worldwide destinations included in the price.

Where is this palace you speak of. In BENIDORM of course?

The Costa does not have to costa lot. If in doubt check it out. www.benidormbeaches.com Planning to marry abroad www.your-wedding-planning-help.com

“I’m having a wedding. Can you be my photographer?”

Let’s get one thing straight. I am an amateur photographer. I started photography as a hobby and it is still a hobby. I have a full-time job that is nothing to do with photography. I do it for love, not money.

You want someone to do some cheap photos for you, don’t you? As you know me, you have come expecting that I’ll do the job at little expense to you, perhaps even free.

Well I won’t.

I can’t guarantee that the results will be to your liking. I have no insurance against failures. I have no experience in wedding photography. I can’t do it.

It is YOUR special day. If you want good images and a professional organiser, then you have to pay for this sort of thing. If I do it, it will be a sham and I will lose the confidence of you and your guests. I may even lose your friendship.

I am happy to take some snaps of your cat. If they don’t turn out as expected, no worries. We can take them again or just laugh it off. However, you can’t get married again. It is a one-off process. The best and most reliable results will come from you paying what the service is worth. That means someone else, not me.

Get a professional wedding photographer. Don’t ask me to do it as refusal often offends.

New Age Spirituality27 Apr 2008 12:36 pm

Every four years the world is given the gift of the Olympics. For a few weeks nations lay down their arms and come together to let their world class athletes compete on a level playing field to see who the best is in the many events. Such amazing athleticism was on display the past few weeks. It boggles the mind what these young men and women can accomplish with their bodies. Great feats of skill and determination bring them to the pinnacle of athletic achievement. Incredible.

As I think about what it takes to become a world class athlete capable of competing at the Olympic level, I realize that there are some foundational lessons for all of us to learn as it relates to becoming world class in whatever we set our hands to.

The secret of how these athletes became world class is found in the combination of two fundamental ideas: Desire and dedication.

A 22 year old man doesn’t simply wake up one day and find that he is on the Olympic basketball team. No, it started years before. In fact, it probably started when he was only six or seven years old. Maybe his father took him to a basketball game and that little boy said, “Someday daddy, I am going to be a basketball player.” That was the first sign of desire. Desire is key. World class people start with desire. They have to at some point “want it”.

But we all know people who dream of big things but never accomplish those dreams, don’t we? Why is that? After all, they have desire. They want it. But the engine that drives the dream is dedication. Desire tells you what you want, while dedication is what will get it for you.

Someone may see a young gymnast and say, “Wow, that looks easy.” What they don’t see or perhaps overlook is the years of practice. The years of getting up at 4:30 every morning and going to the gym before going to school. It is the
dedication of the young athlete, the many times of failing in practice, the many times of falling off the equipment and faithfully getting back on that turns a wisher into a world class doer.

A person with desire but no dedication will never achieve much. You must have the powerful combination of both.

So let’s take a closer look at each of these and gain some insight into what desire and dedication are all about.

Desire. There are three parts to desire:

. Dreaming
. The Vision
. Focus

First, is dreaming. Have you let yourself dream lately? Just sit down and begin to imagine all of the incredible possibilities your life could become? Spend some time just dreaming.

Next is the vision. Once you dream, you begin to cut back on all of the possibilities and narrow it to what possibility it is that you really want. You begin to create a vision for your life. You begin to see it as you want it.

Lastly under desire is focus. Once you have the vision, you have to really focus in on that dream. This is where you get really specific about what your life is going to look like.

Now for dedication. There are also three parts:

. The Plan
. Beginning
. Perseverance

First is the plan. Without a plan you will drift to and fro. You will certainly not carry out your dream if you do not have a plan. So write it down. Set your goals. Know what you want and how you are going to get there.

Second is the beginning. This may sound simple and yet it is simply profound. Many people have a dream and they even have a plan, but they never begin. So simple: Just start. The first step on the long journey is still just one step. If you have a dream and a plan, take a step in the right direction.

Lastly is to persevere. Every road to every dream has a section or sections that is hard to travel. Every great dream will encounter difficulty. The question isn’t whether or not you will encounter trouble, but how you will respond to trouble. Will you quit when the going gets tough or will you persevere? I have found that every successful person I know, myself included, has encountered problems along the way that tempted them to quit. Yet they persevered and achieved their dream.

Let’s take a look at the progression. As you do, think about where you are in the progression of becoming a world class dream pursuer.

1. Dream
2. Create a vision
3. Focus the vision
4. Develop a plan
5. Begin to pursue the dream
6. Persevere

Friends, I hope for you the fulfillment of every dream that you have. That is what life is about isn’t it? But to do so, I know that you will have to combine your desire with good old dedication. And when you combine those two, you will be well on your way to leading a world class life!

To Your Success,
